Vanilla

Madagascar, the first exporter in the world !

Often named “black gold”, vanilla is a very popular spice due to its flavor. 80% of world production comes from Madagascar especially the species: Vanilla planifolia, also known as Bourbon vanilla. We had the chance to communicate with one of the biggest vanilla exporter of Madagascar, Floribis, the leader in vanilla production, transformation and exportation since 20 years. Only Floribis plantation of vanilla represents 700 hectares according to them while there are many other exporters. They also mentioned that their potential export is to Europe and they use European standards for that. It is known that vanilla price varies all the time and Floribis is not out of the question.

Vanilla price

The only fact that a vanilla comes from Madagascar, makes it expensive. There are many factors that influence the price like the quality for example. The more it is long, fleshy, fresh, smooth and shiny, more it is expensive. The amount of vanillin, the way it is sold, the local business practice and climatic condition also play an important role in price increase. That is Sambavanille’s information. Last year on May 2023 for example the price was 220€ for 10-12 cm and 300€ - 350€ for more than 16 cm of vanilla pods.
